ADS-Hekaton-1

Likely going to be episode 1.

  • 1m Introduction; we need a song?
  • 2m opening schpeil by Appledog introducing the show
  • 3m-5m Monologue–Introduction of Hekaton, subject introduction.
    • Appledog: He's more than just a mild-mannered moderator on the Politics and Religion server – he's a Christian – and a Vegan. I've been thinking a lot about Veganism and Vegetarianism in the bible.
      • Genesis 1:29 says, “And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.” So we know that in the garden of Eden God only intended us to eat plants for food, not animals. I guess the question is, what changed?
      • By Genesis 9:3, we see written that “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.” So we know something had to happen in the first ten chapters of Genesis which would cause God to change the rules for Man and allow us to eat meat.
      • One clue could be found in Genesis 6:7 where “(So) the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” Here “them” includes animals. Why is God sorry he made animals?
      • If there is an answer in the bible, it can only be in a place where animals are mentioned in early Genesis.
      • Genesis 6:13 says that in some way, animal life had become corrupted along with human life. It says, ““I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them.”” The phrase “all flesh” is used throughout the narrative to include both human and animal life. How was animal life corrupted? This is not explained directly, but in other parts of the bible we see that a person’s sin can contaminate other people or animals at times (e.g., Joshua 7:24-25; Romans 8:19-22). One famous example would be Rachel stealing her father's idols, which although it was done to help her father is said to have eventually caused her death. Another example would be Genesis 13 where we see “14 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, …” which shows that God was waiting for Lot to leave Abraham's presence.
      • The sages give some explanations on this as well by pointing out two odd statements in Genesis 6. In Genesis 6:2 it is written that when the Sons of God saw the daughters of men, they chose from among anything they saw fit. The explanation is that since they didn't merely chose from among the daughters of men, they may have engaged in sin with animals, corrupting them. They also point out in Genesis 6:13 where God does not only command Noah to take animals two by two, and also specifically commands Noah to take them as male and female. The implications here is that the animals were both cohabiting with different species, and that they were failing to reproduce male and female. In other words, that the natural order had somehow become corrupted. This plays into the earlier statement that men (as well as animals, as implied by 'all flesh') had become corrupted, and how, by choosing from among anyone or anything they saw fit.
  • 3-7 min Hekaton's opening monologue – talk about yourself, explain what veganism is in contrast to vegetarianism, say whatever you want really. Talk about your latest book or movie project :)
  • 10 min question segment
    • Appledog: But we return to the idea that at least in genesis 9:3, God has permitted man to eat meat. I think this would be a great time to invite Hekaton to speak on these issues from a Christian perspective. Hekaton, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and tell us about veganism. I've heard veganism is a little different than vegetarianism, for example.
    • Hekaton: (200-400 words ex. 3-5 min)
  • 10 min Canned questions segment
    • Note to Hekaton: you may have already covered these questions in your opening monologue. If so, please suggest alternate questions so we can fill the time, thanks!
    • (Lead-In) Appledog: In Genesis 9:4 we read “But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.”. Do you think that the difficulty of removing the blood from meat is a factor encouraging Christians to adopt veganism or vegetarianism?
    • Hekaton:
    • Appledog: Veganism is usually religious in nature, usually buddhist. But you're a Christian. Do you think there is any Christian basis for Veganism?
    • (Note to Hekaton, I've looked up some passages for you, you could comment on some of these or come up with your own of course)
      • In Daniel 1:12-16 we find a story which seems to promote vegetarianism by implying it is a healthier diet than eating meat. It says, “Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's food. So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.” My question to you as a Christian is, are you aware of any similar story in the New Testament which promotes Vegetarianism?
      • Romans 14:1-23 “eats only vegetables”
      • Romans 14:21 “It is good not to eat meat or drink wine…”
      • 1 Corinthians 8:13 “Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.”
      • Proverbs 23:19-20 “Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way. Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, ”
      • Proverbs 15:17 “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it.”
      • Isaiah 66:3 ““He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man; … These have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations;”
    • (Closing Question) Appledog:
    • In Isaiah 11:6-9 we have a stunning portrait of the messianic age. it says “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.” This shows us that in the messianic age it's not just us who will only eat a vegetarian diet but also, all animals, prey and predator alike. So going back to eden where we could only eat plants, if this is God's picture for a perfect world what are we doing here eating meat? It seems like this is a corruption of the world that was left-over from previous times. It seems like the bible is hinting towards us that maybe we shouldn't be eating meat in such a capricous manner. (Hekaton's response. Suggested: Attack the meat industry, speak about the cruelty and sin which arises out of the meat industry).
  • 10-15 min Question and Answer section
    • Kind of like an AMA. We will ask users to DM their questions to appledog and I will select some to answer you, or we could even do a real AMA where people post their questions in Chat.
    • I might also take some questions esp. because it's the first episode but most of them will be directed for you.
  • It's my experience that these events usually drag on so I've scheduled 45 to 50 minutes of activity, and we can see what happens from there.
  • This is a rough draft, please share any ideas you have. If you end up forgetting the general structure of the show don't worry I'll move it along by asking questions and helping the narrative as much as I can. Like a talk show.
