The First Book of Moses
called
Genesis

1. In the Beginning

2,3 In the Beginning,

  • In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
  • The earth was astonishingly empty, and completely dark.

4,5 The First Day

  • On the first day, God created light.
  • God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
  • God saw that the light was good, therefore he separated the light and the darkness.
  • God called the light “day”, and the darkness he called “night”.

6,7 The Second Day

  • On the second day, God created heaven.
  • God divided the heaven above from the earth and the waters below it.

8,9 The Third Day

  • On the third day, God created the land and the seas, the flowers and the trees.
  • God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear,” and it was so.
  • God called the dry land “earth”; and the waters he called “seas”.
  • God saw that it was good.

10,11 (3rd day part 2)

  • Then God said, Let the earth bring forth plants and trees with fruit and seeds, and they all appeared!
  • The earth grew many kinds of flowers and plants, and trees with fruit on them and seeds inside.
  • God saw that it was good.
  • There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

12,13 The Fourth Day

  • On the fourth day, God created the sun, the moon and the stars.
  • God said, “Let there be lights to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years,”
  • So God made two great lights; the sun to rule the day, and moon to rule the night and the stars.
  • Then God put them in heaven to shine their light upon the earth.
  • God looked and saw that the lights were good.

14, 15 The Fifth Day

  • On the fifth day, God created the Fish and the Birds.
  • God said, “Let the waters become filled with so many fish! And let birds fly above the earth in the heavens.”
  • And so God made the biggest whales and the tiniest teeming, swarming fish, and gave each one a family.
  • God made every bird with wings, and gave them a family, too.
  • When he had made them, he looked and saw that this was good.
  • So God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds be multiplied upon the earth.”
  • And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

16, 17 The Sixth Day

  • On the sixth day, God created all the land animals and Man.
  • God said, “Let there be animals!” and they animals came.
  • God made different kinds of animals. And God made sure each animal was part of a family.
  • God liked the animals and said they were good.

18, 19 God Makes Man

  • Then God said, “Let's make man in our image, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over all the animals on the earth.”
  • So God created Adam and Eve in his own image, as male and female.
  • God blessed them, and said unto them, “Be fruitful and multiply; replenish the earth and subdue it; take dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

20, 21 Plants for Food

  • God also said, “I have given you every green plant with seeds, and every tree fruit with seeds inside, for you to eat.”
  • And God said, “I have also given all the animals, every green plant for their food.”
  • When God saw every thing that he had made, he knew it was very good!
  • And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

22, 23 The Seventh Day

  • On the seventh day, God stopped creating.
  • The heavens and the earth were finished, and everything they contained; all creatures great and small.
  • And God rested[a] on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
  • And God blessed[a] the seventh day; because on that day God rested from all the work he had created and made.
